Pressemitteilung -

Paul Group presents further developments in H2 mobility with the PH2P® Truck 6x2 and other prototypes and innovations at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024

  • Paul Group presents the advanced hydrogen truck PH2P® Truck as a 6x2 version at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024 - for new applications with higher payload for climate-neutral inner-city logistics
  • Special vehicle construction remains an important pillar and growth segment for the Group - new developments and prototypes are being presented
  • Strategy remains open to all technologies with additional offerings such as high-voltage and H2 training courses at the Paul Academy and future BEV developments

Hanover / Vilshofen, September 16, 2024 - The Paul Group will be presenting exciting new projects and solutions at the largest international trade fair for commercial vehicles and the transport sector IAA Transportation 2024 in the outdoor area at stand K66. One highlight is the further development of the PH2P® truck as a 6x2 version with an additional third air-sprung self-steering axle with a total weight of up to 22 tons. This means that higher payloads of up to 13 tons are now possible with the compact PH2P® truck without a trailer. This is particularly interesting for applications in beverage logistics in inner-city delivery traffic. The additional self-steering axle increases flexibility and handling quality when delivering in tight inner city areas. The other equipment features correspond to those of the 4x2 PH2P® truck with the familiar Toyota 80kW fuel cell, a Voith drive with 200 kW peak and 310kW peak with single-stage drive, as well as 120kWh batteries and 30 kg of hydrogen in six cylinders, each with a filling volume of 5 kg and 350 bar pressure in the Paul H2 tank system. Depending on the driving profile, the vehicle has a range of around 300 km.

Bernhard Wasner, Managing Director of the Paul Group, explains: "The range and H2 consumption have been proven in the successful practical use of the series vehicle on routes of over 500,000 km. Depending on the route profile, the range is even higher. The use of the medium-duty H2 truck meets the requirements of transport companies in both interurban and inner-city areas. The feedback from our customers so far has exceeded our expectations. Existing diesel vehicles could be replaced one-to-one, especially as the refueling times are comparable, virtually nothing has changed for the drivers and even multi-shift operations are still possible. We are particularly pleased about the customer demand from beverage logistics, which we can meet with a compact 22-ton truck like the PH2P® 6x2 to meet their need for a higher payload."

Paul Commercial Vehicles has designed a steel frame solution "Standalone Tank Mounting" for the Hyundai XCIENT FC, which can accommodate the existing Hyundai H2 tank system and which can be used in any "swap body vehicle" registered in Germany. It is integrated as a free-standing unit behind the cab instead of being attached to the superstructure as is usual with Hyundai. This increases flexibility in the choice of superstructures. Paul's integrated BDF swap-body system also enables the flexible use of swap bodies or Euro containers. Beat Hirschi, CEO Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG: "Our success in the sale of swap body vehicles is based on excellent cooperation with Paul Commercial Vehicles and their outstanding delivery quality. Precision and high reliability form the basis for the great trust in our partnership. I was particularly impressed by the fact that Paul's team always offers solutions at the highest level, even in challenging situations. I am delighted that we will be able to present the final product and other projects together at the IAA."

Paul special vehicle construction highlights: From the prototype development of an MB high-load Sprinter to the MB Arocs with flexible construction vehicle body and the agricultural truck

Paul Commercial Vehicles demonstrates its leading position in the European special vehicle construction market at the IAA Transportation with the presentation of outstanding examples of current developments. The company develops prototypes and series vehicles in cooperation with leading OEMs. This currently includes a high-load van, for example, which is built as a minibus or van based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter - with a gross vehicle weight of up to 6.8 tons. Paul will also be converting the Mercedes-Benz Arocs into a flexible construction vehicle, which will be used by Autobahn GmbH des Bundes in a small series of over 50 units. In cooperation with the agricultural sales specialist Lankhorst Nord, part of the Krone Group, Paul is expanding the successful agricultural truck concept.

The Paul Group's strategic orientation is clearly open to technology: It is developing both hydrogen vehicles (Paul Hydrogen Power PH2P) and, in future, battery electric vehicles (BEV - Paul Electric Power PEP). Bernhard Wasner will explain this at the press conference at the Paul stand in the outdoor area on September 16, 24. He emphasizes the importance of innovation in the Paul Group: "In a politically and economically challenging environment, SMEs are called upon to further develop and deliver innovations in the field of alternative drive systems. We clearly accept this task and are setting new standards with our advanced drive solutions. Our open technology strategy enables us to react quickly to market changes and offer our customers sustainable, efficient mobility solutions. This ranges from our PH2P® truck and its further development in the 6x2 version to the development of an H2 infrastructure with H2 filling stations and fast-charging stations in the Next Mobility Consortium together with partners. Last year, we used them to create a complete ecosystem for H2 ramp-up in the transportation sector in our catchment area. This also includes a comprehensive range of high-voltage and H2 training courses offered by our Paul Academy, which was founded this year and is aimed at all workshop employees in after-sales service companies throughout Germany who drive, maintain and repair BEV and H2 vehicles and offer other services for them."

Paul Academy rounds off the Paul Group's high-voltage and H2 range

Alternative drive systems require special knowledge and expertise from fleet operators and garages: The Paul Academy of the Paul Group offers a well-founded and particularly practical training program for safety in handling high-voltage and H2 technology. It teaches developers, technicians, mechatronics engineers and mechanics in companies that use high-voltage and H2 gas technology for battery electric BEVs and hydrogen vehicles how to operate in the best possible and safest way. The program includes online training courses for a quick and convenient introduction to the maintenance and repair of vehicles with alternative drive systems. It therefore provides an important basic building block for future-proof workshops.

Josef Paul GmbH & Co. KG, Passau, was also presented at the press conference, which significantly expands the Paul Group's overall offering with vehicle sales for commercial vehicles, passenger cars and, most recently, motorhome sales and rental as well as after-sales service.
